The next Meeting of the Discussion Group will take place on Saturday 24 May at the Unitarian Church in New Road, Brighton, at our customary time of 10.30 to 12.00. We look forward to welcoming all who are able to be present in person, and for those who cannot the link to join online is given below.
On 19 May the UK and the EU will hold a summit to begin to address the terms of our future relationship - the importance of this cannot be overstated as the wholly negative outcomes of Brexit become more apparent every day. Although public opinion seems to have moved towards the benefits of being part of the EU there is as yet no strong support for Rejoin! The European Movement has produced a list of ten steps (listed below) where the government might make real progress in restoring our country’s well-being, security, and economic prosperity. Our meeting on Saturday 24 May will focus on how - and if - progress has been made or is likely, and some of our members will have been focussing on specific areas and will lead the discussions. Here are the areas which seem achievable without wholesale political upheaval.
A youth opportunity scheme
A defence partnership
Rejoining Erasmus+
A better deal for musicians and touring artists
Rejoining Creative Europe
Removing red tape for professionals
Rejoining the European Environment Agency
A UK-EU agreement on plant and animal health
A mutual recognition agreement on conformity assessments
A joined-up approach to energy and net zero
There are of course others of varying difficulty - such as fishery policy - and of overwhelming importance such as defence and international trade developments, but the areas above are where individual, community and group pressure can be and are being brought to bear. Come and tell us what you think and what can be done.
